Did you know that the first sewing machine was invented in 1790? This makes the sewing machine as we know it, roughly around 225 years old. Through those years, the sewing machine has continued to evolve and change, to make sewing easier and even more accessible even to newcomers.
The
sewing machine has two general categories, the industrial type and the domestic
type. The industrial sewing machine is usually larger, faster and comes in a
variety of sizes, cost, appearance and task. From being a complete manually
operated machine in its early conception, the sewing machine has greatly
improved together with the ever increasing demand that the market has. Sewing
machines became more versatile, and often provides more than one task that can
be fulfilled.
The following are the specialty
types of sewing machines:
Lockstitch Sewing Machine
▪ This is usually used in homes and sometimes in school. ▪ is also called “Domestic Sewing Machine”
▪ It is run by
foot and may also be converted to electrical power machine.
Hi-Speed Lockstitch Sewing Machine
▪ This is sometimes called “Straight Stitching Machine” or Industrial sewing machine.
▪ It has
automatic lubrication and used by tailors and dressmakers.
Over Edging Sewing Machine
▪ Other companies call it “small machine”.
▪ It finishes the raw edges of the pattern for construction.
Embroidery Sewing Machine
▪ This is used in making fancy stitches and in making different kinds of embroidery stitches on fabrics for Barong Tagalog, pillow cases, linen, and other novelty items.
Buttonhole Sewing Machine
▪ This is used in making buttonholes on garments.
Button Attachment Sewing Machine
▪ This is used in attaching buttons to the garments.
Double Needle Sewing Machine
▪ This is used in the construction of the different kinds of clothing especially for the inseam, out seam and side seam.
Bartacking Sewing Machine
▪ This is used in reinforcing the opening and closing of pockets.
